Prawns in Mustard Sauce – one of the delectable Prawn Recipes from the East Indian Cuisine. This recipe is adapted from ‘The East Indian Cookery Book.’
Basically, Prawns in a Mustard sauce is a recipe where we cook prawns in a Vindaloo Masala Paste with lots of mustard. The quantity of mustard in this recipe is a little more than you would usually add. Mustard adds a pungent taste to the sauce or gravy making it delectable and flavourful.
I remember mum making this prawn recipe a few times but was not sure of the ingredients until I stumbled upon the EI Cookery Book. The book also has a few more prawn recipes that I had never tried before and I wish to include those in this blog.
This is a must-try recipe for those who have never tasted it. The thick tangy, spicy sauce with the flavour of prawns and a pungent taste of mustard is a recipe that will satiate your taste buds.
Table of Contents
Mustard Prawns – Ingredients
- Prawns/Shrimps. Prawns with skin intact make a wonderful recipe. You could use skinless prawns, this tastes good too. I have used about 9 to 10 medium prawns for this recipe.
- Mustard Sauce. For the Mustard Sauce or gravy, make a smooth paste with these ingredients, adding water –
- Mustard – 2 tbsp
- Dried Red Chillies – 6
- Garlic cloves -6
- Ginger – 1 inch
- Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
- Turmeric – 1/2 tsp
- Vinegar – 2 tbsp
- Sugar & Salt. Sugar to balance the taste of the sauce is optional though but I recommend not to skip the sugar. Add salt to taste.
- Oil for cooking. Use any vegetable oil of your choice. Just 3 to 4 tbsp is fine.

Mustard Prawn Recipe
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Serves : 4 persons
Step I. Devein and wash the prawns/shrimps well. Discard the shells if you like.
Step II. Grind all the ingredients for the Mustard Sauce into a smooth paste with water. Arrange the prawns in the pan you like to cook them in and then add the blended paste. Also add sugar, salt, and about a cup of water, ie. 200 ml. Mix well and place the pan on medium heat.
Step II. Cover the prawns and allow them to cook in the mustard sauce for about 5 to 8 minutes or until they are tender. Once done, check for seasoning. Reduce the extra liquid by cooking on high heat, we are looking for a thicker sauce or gravy. Finally, garnish the dish with coriander leaves and switch off the heat. Prawns in Mustard Sauce are ready for serving.
Serving Suggestions
Serve Mustard Prawns along with your main course meal as a side dish. You could also enjoy this with Rotis, bread, or Chitaps.
