Prawn Drumstick Curry Recipe | Lonvas

Prawn Drumstick Curry Recipe is a simple East Indian Prawn curry recipe also called Prawn Lonvas. Lonvas is basically a meat or fish curry with vegetables, and coconut. We make this curry with bottle masala and it is also mildly spiced.

Lonvas is a very popular East Indian curry and we generally have this with either steamed rice or Rotis. Moreover, we prefer to have this curry for our afternoon meals.

PRAWN DRUMSTICK CURRY RECIPE

How to make Prawn and Drumstick Curry

To make this simple and easy prawn curry recipe, you will need –

  • Prawns, cleaned and deveined – 15 to 18 medium
  • Drumsticks, 4 to 5 cut into 3-inch pieces or as desired
  • Bottle Masala or Curry Masala – 1.5 tbsp
  • Coconut milk – 250 ml or 1 cup
  • Tamarind pulp (one small ball of tamarind soaked in 1/2 a cup of warm water)
  • Onion, 1 medium sliced
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for cooking

Method :

  • Heat a pan and saute the sliced onion in 2 tbsp oil. When the onion is translucent, add in the cut drumstick pieces. Add salt and a little water and then cover and cook till the drumsticks are tender.

  • Once the drumsticks are almost cooked and tender, add in the prawns. Add in some more water. Cover again and cook till the prawns are done. Do not overcook the prawns, or else they will turn hard.

  • After the prawns are cooked, add in 1.5 tbsp of Bottle Masala or Curry Masala. Also, add 1 cup coconut milk and tamarind pulp. At this stage, you could also add freshly ground coconut paste, instead of coconut milk. Adjust the consistency of the curry accordingly by adding a little more water or coconut milk.
  • After you add the coconut milk and the tamarind pulp, let the curry simmer for 2 or 3 more minutes.

Ingredients
  

  • 15 to 18 Prawns, cleaned and deveined
  • 4 to 5 Drumsticks, cut into pieces
  • 1 medium Onion, sliced
  • tbsp Bottle masala or curry masala powder
  • 250 ml Coconut Milk 1 cup
  • 1 small ball of tamarind soaked in ½ cup of warm water. extract pulp
  • 2 tbsp Oil for cooking
  • Salt to taste

Instructions
 

  • Heat oil in a pan and saute the sliced onion till translucent.
  • When onion is translucent, add the drumsticks. Add salt and a little water and then cover and cook till the drumsticks are tender.
  • Now add in the prawns and cover and cook till done. Add a little more water, if required.
  • When the prawns are cooked add 1½ tbsp of bottle masala or curry masala. Also add the coconut milk and bring the curry to a boil.
  • Add in the tamarind juice and simmer for 2 to 3 minutes. Ajust the consistency of the gravy, add more water if required.
  • Serve with steamed rice or Rotis.

Notes

  1.  You can use fresh coconut paste, instead of coconut milk.
  2.  Instead of drumsticks, you can add vegetables like cauliflower, turnips, radish, etc.
  3. Adjust masala to suit your taste.
  4. Instead of Bottle masala, use any curry masala or just add 1 tbsp chilly powder with 1/2 tbsp garam masala powder.
