Besides making curry you could also fry or grill mackerel fish. These mackerels make a wonderful side-dish or an appetizer when you stuff them with any masala.

I have two easy Mackerel Fish Recipes in this blog that you may like to try out and they are amazing.

Mackerel Fish Curry Recipe

Ingredients for Mackerel Fish Curry Recipe. Other than the mackerels, blend all the ingredients into a smooth paste to make nice tangy fish curry.

MACKERELS – Select fresh and firm mackerels with shiny skin for this fish curry recipe. Clean and wash the mackerels well and then cut them into 2 or 3 pieces depending on its size.

RED CHILLIES – We use either Bedki or Guntur chillies for making fish curry. A good fish curry must have a reddish-orange colour and hence select and use your chillies accordingly.

GARLIC – Add a few flakes of garlic to make the masala paste. You could also add a little ginger if you like, but I skipped ginger for this mackerel curry recipe. Considering the medicinal properties of ginger, you may prefer to add a small piece while blending the masala.

JEERA/CUMIN SEEDS – I generally use only cumin seeds for certain fish curries. Some prefer to use coriander seeds as well and I leave this to you, you could also add little coriander seeds for this curry.

SLICED ONION – Use half a sliced onion for the curry paste. It is optional though and you are free to skip it. However, this will not alter the taste of the curry.

TAMARIND – Mackerel Fish Curry tastes the best when it is slightly tangy. Add a little extra tamarind for this curry recipe than you would normally do. Also, drop in a few kokum petals if you wish, for that extra tang. Blend tamarind along with the masala paste or extract the juice of the tamarind and then add it to the curry.

To extract tamarind pulp, simply soak a lime sized ball of tamarind into warm water and let it rest for 5 to 6 minutes. Then squeeze out the juice with the help of your fingers and use this in the curry while it is boiling.

FENUGREEK/METHI SEEDS – Methi or fenugreek seeds are considered good for digestive issues. The flesh of mackerel tends to spoil quickly sometimes and could lead to digestive problems. Methi seeds help in digestion and are hence used in fish curries, especially mackerels. Use a small quantity, about half a teaspoon while blending the masala paste.

How to make Mackerel Fish Curry

This is the simplest of all the fish curry recipes that I know. Mackerels cook very fast and you can make this tangy fish curry within minutes – under 30 minutes to be precise.

  • Once you have got the mackerels cleaned, washed, and cut, then apply salt and turmeric. Let the fish sit on your kitchen counter till you get the ingredients for the fish curry masala ready.
  • Put all the ingredients of the curry into a blender, including the tamarind along with the warm water. Then blend the masala ingredients into a smooth paste.
  • Now after you have blended the masala ingredients, you could sieve this paste to remove any unblended ingredients. Otherwise, just pour this paste into the vessel that you want to make the fish curry.
  • Wash the mixture jar and add this water to the masala paste in the vessel and then place this on a low to medium flame. Add salt to taste, remembering that you have also added salt to the fish.
  • When the curry comes to a rolling boil, and this should take you anything between 8 to 10 minutes, then add the mackerels.
  • Cover the vessel and let the mackerels cook on a medium flame for about 7 to 8 minutes or till done. Take care not to overcook the fish. The fish should be firm but done.
  • You could also drop in a few green broken chillies when the curry is boiling if you like the curry to be a little spicier.
  • Similarly, drop in a few kokum petals if you like a tangy curry. This is optional though and I did not use kokum in this recipe.
  • Tangy Mackerel Fish Curry is ready and now you can switch off the flame. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves, if you like.
