Step-by-Step Cooking Instructions

Now that you have all the ingredients ready, let’s dive into the step-by-step cooking instructions for our masala fish curry:

  1. Start by marinating the fish fillets. Rub turmeric and salt onto the fish fillets, ensuring they are evenly coated. Set aside for 15 minutes.
  2. Make a masala paste with ingredients listed under ‘Masala Paste’
  3. Next, heat vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the sliced onion, ginger, and garlic juliennes and cook until onions turn golden brown, stirring occasionally. This will take approximately 4-5 minutes over medium heat.
  4. Now, it’s time to add the masala paste. Mix all ingredients well and cook for 2-3 minutes until the raw smell disappears. Also, add salt to taste.
  5. Add approx. 200 – 250 ml water to make the curry. Mix well, add the chopped tomato and slit chillies and bring the curry to a boil.
  6. Gently place the marinated fish fillets into the pan, submerging them in the curry. Let the fish cook in the gravy for 7-8 minutes or until it is cooked well and flakes easily with a fork.
  7. Once the fish is cooked, turn off the heat. Serve hot with steamed rice or rotis for a complete meal. The combination of the fish and aromatic curry is simply irresistible.

Tips for Perfecting Your Masala Fish Curry

To ensure your masala fish curry turns out perfectly every time, here are some tips to keep in mind:

  1. Choose Fresh Fish: Opt for fresh fish fillets that are firm and have a mild aroma. Fresh fish will enhance the overall taste and texture of your curry.
  2. Don’t Overcook the Fish: Fish cooks quickly, so be careful not to overcook it. Overcooked fish can become dry and lose its flavor. Keep an eye on the cooking time and remove the fish from the heat as soon as it is done.
  3. Adjust the Spice Level: The spice level in the curry can be adjusted according to your preference. If you like it spicy, increase the number of chillies or add some chopped green chilies.
  4. Experiment with Fresh Herbs: While coriander is the traditional herb used for garnishing, feel free to experiment with other fresh herbs such as mint or parsley. These herbs can add a unique freshness to the dish.
