Prawn Chilli Fry Recipe

There are many ways to make this Prawn Chilli Fry recipe, for instance, some add red chilly powder, coriander powder, and so on. The recipe that I am sharing is a Prawn Chilli Fry dry recipe that my family adores. The recipe has prawns, onions, and also potatoes. It also has minimum spices like the garam masala powder and pepper powder. This is the recipe that my mom would make often at home and we would heartily enjoy it with some bread or chapatis. Even a simple vegetable pulao or khichdi with rice and lentils would also make an awesome combination.

You must try out this simple recipe for your next dinner menu. You could also make Prawn Chilli Fry Recipe without the potatoes and it would still be delicious. On the other hand, you could also substitute the potato with cubed tomatoes.

This recipe gets ready in just under 30 minutes if you have everything ready at hand.

As I mentioned, you could also use tomato instead of potato for this Prawn Chilli Fry and follow the same recipe. You can also add tomatoes to this recipe or simply replace the potato with tomatoes.

The key here is not to fry the tomatoes till they soften up but instead add them towards the end. Saute the chilly fry for a minute after adding the tomatoes, cut in big cubes, and then switch off the flame.

Recipe for Prawn Chilli Fry

This is a very simple and also easy Prawn Chilli Fry recipe. The ingredients that we use for this recipe are minimal and also available easily in our pantry. Besides, adding only a few ingredients brings out the flavour of the prawns and you will enjoy eating.

Moreover, Cooking is an art wherein you use minimum ingredients and churn out the tastiest recipe.

Ingredients

ONIONS. The main ingredients of the Prawn Chilli Fry are the onions and the potatoes. Onions form the base of any Chilly Fry Recipe along with some green chillies of course.

But the key here is not to over fry the onions in the recipe. Fry them by stirring frequently until they turn translucent but not mushy. Onions should have a slight crunch, not too crunchy but at the same time, they should be well cooked.

Since onions are the base of a good chilly fry we have to use them in larger quantities. For a cup of shelled prawns, I prefer to use two large onions. But then again it depends on your taste and choice, you could reduce or increase the number of onions.

GINGER/GARLIC/GREEN CHILLIES. You could also use ginger, garlic, and chillies in any form. Chop them fine or blend them together or just simply cut them into juliennes and add. I prefer to finely chop the ginger and garlic and then add them to the chilly fry. But for this recipe, I used ginger and garlic juliennes. I slit the green chillies and then added them to the chilly fry.

SPICES. The only spices that you need for this Chilli Fry Recipe is pepper powder along with a dash of Garam Masala Powder. You could use store-bought garam masala powder as well, but I would suggest a simple blend of cinnamon, cardamom, and cloves. In addition to this also add freshly ground pepper powder for this recipe for more flavour.

LEMON JUICE. Finally, to give the Prawn Chilli Fry Recipe a tang, add the juice of half a lemon or a tablespoon or two of vinegar. The choice is still yours. I sometimes add Apple Cider Vinegar but for this recipe, I used lemon juice. Using either lemon juice or vinegar makes a difference to the recipe because it adds a nice tang to the chilly fry. I suggest that you do not skip it.

POTATO & TOMATO. Last, but not the least you must add the fried and cubed potato to the Prawn Chilli Fry, as the name suggests. Cut the potato into cubes and shallow fry them with a little salt and then add to the chilli fry. You could also add cubed tomato if you don’t like potatoes or simply add both. Finally, garnish with coriander leaves.

How to make Prawn Chilli Fry

  • Heat oil in a fry pan or an open pan and add the sliced onions. Fry for 2 to 3 minutes until the onions are translucent.
  • Now add the ginger and garlic juliennes and also the slit green chillies and continue to fry till the raw smell of the ginger and garlic disappears. Fry on a low to medium heat so as not to caramelize the onions.
  • Once the onions are translucent add in the shelled prawns, salt and also the turmeric powder.
  • Continue to stir fry on a medium to high flame, until the prawns are almost cooked. This should take you about 4 to 5 minutes. Do not overcook the prawns at this stage.
  • Now add the fried potatoes and mix well. You could also add cubed potatoes but this will take a little longer to cook. Moreover, the prawns will also tend to overcook.
  • Next, add the Garam Masala Powder and stir fry for another 2 to 3 minutes. Finally, add the lemon juice and freshly ground pepper powder.
  • Garnish with some fresh coriander leaves. Prawns Chilli Fry (with Potatoes) is ready to be served.
