Easy Chicken Tikka Masala Recipe | Chicken Tikka Gravy Recipe

Chicken Tikka Masala Recipe is so easy to make with simple ingredients available at home.

Boneless Chicken Tikka in a creamy gravy that is bursting with flavours is exactly what we crave. In this recipe, we use sweet mild spices to flavour the Chicken Tikka gravy.

This is recipe is so easy to make and is very similar to the Chicken Makhani Recipe in this blog. Unlike the Chicken Makhani, we use boneless chicken pieces for this recipe and then grill it on a grill pan.

Fresh cream enhances the texture of this delicious tomato based gravy that is mildly spiced.

How to make Chicken Tikka Masala at home

We make Chicken Tikka Masala in two simple steps. First, marinate the chicken pieces and then grill them on a grill pan.

We then make an onion-tomato based creamy gravy and cook the tikkas in the gravy. We cook it for at least 10 to 15 minutes so as to enable the chicken tikkas absorb the exquisite flavours of the gravy.

STEP IPREPARE THE CHICKEN TIKKA

  • To make the chicken tikkas we like to use boneless chicken. For this recipe, we used breast boneless, but feel free to use the thigh pieces too.
  • Cut the boneless chicken into 1-inch cubes and then marinate them and allow them to rest for at least 30 minutes.
  • Then drizzle some oil on a hot grill pan and grill the chicken pieces for 2 minutes on each side. Here we are only grilling the chicken tikka which will later be cooked in the Gravy.
  • You could enjoy this Chicken Tikka as an appetizer too. But in that case, you will have to grill the chicken pieces for a longer time till done.
  • Chicken tikkas could also be grilled in a pre-heated oven or skewered and grilled in an air-fryer. Grilling chicken tikkas in an air-fryer will take you 10 minutes only.
  • Let’s go through the marinade for the chicken tikka. We use only a few simple ingredients because we do not want to over-power the flavours of the tikka in the gravy.
    • Boneless Chicken – 500 grams
    • Ginger-garlic paste – 1 tbsp
    • Chilli powder – 1 tbsp
    • Yogurt – 1/2 cup
    • Mustard oil – 1 tbsp
    • Salt to taste

Chicken Tikka Masala Gravy Recipe

You must have the perfect combination of spices for a creamy tomato based gravy recipe that is bursting with flavours. This gravy is cooked in butter for a richer taste. Use oil if you are health conscious or a combination of butter and oil also works fine for this recipe.

STEP II – PREPARE CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA GRAVY

INGREDIENTS

  • ONIONS – This is an onion-tomato based gravy and we use 2 medium chopped onions. We fry the onions in ghee or oil or a combination of both until they turn translucent.
  • TOMATOES – 02 medium chopped tomatoes pureed is good enough to make a thick gravy. You could use half a cup of the store-bought tomato puree instead.
  • GINGER-GARLIC PASTE – 1 tbsp of homemade or store-bought ginger-garlic paste is fine.
  • CHILL POWDER – Use 1.5 tsp of Kashmiri Red Chilli powder for a rich red colour.
  • CORIANDER POWDER – Use only 1 tsp of this, you could also add cumin powder as well. I simply chose to omit cumin here.
  • GARAM MASALA POWDER – If using homemade Garam Masala powder then add only 1/2 a tsp or add according to your taste. Don’t let the garam masala powder overpower the flavours of the gravy.
  • KASURI METHI – Roast 1 tbsp of Kasuri Methi and add it to the gravy toward the end of cooking. Do not skip this as it gives an authentic taste to the Chicken Tikka Gravy.
  • FRESH CREAM – A quarter cup of fresh creamy changes the texture and taste of the gravy and you will love this.

HOW TO MAKE CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA

  • Heat 3 tbsp butter/oil in a vessel and fry the chopped onions until translucent or light brown.
  • Now add the tomato puree, red chilli powder, and coriander powder and fry well till oil oozes out.
  • Then add the grilled chicken tikkas and approx 300 ml water to make the chicken tikka gravy. Cover the vessel and allow the gravy and the tikkas to cook for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • To finish off, add the fresh cream, kasuri methi, and garam masala powder.

Tips and Serving Suggestions

To get a restaurant-style smoky effect for the Chicken Tikka Masala gravy, place lighted coal in a small bowl and pour some ghee or butter on it. The smoke emitting from the coal will give the gravy a restaurant-style flavour.

Marinate the chicken tikkas well to allow the flavours of the marinade to penetrate into the chicken. A good marination time is the key to soft and tender chicken tikka.

You can enjoy Chicken Tikka Masala with butter naan or Rotis. You could also have it with some jeera rice. The East Indian Wedding Rice is also a good choice.

Serve this with some onion-tomato salad or curd Raita.
