Poha Mutton or Mutton Poha is a delicious recipe from the East Indian Cusine. It’s got another name ‘Mutton Tope’. This a unique recipe of pressed rice with mutton.
I understand that this recipe ‘Mutton Tope‘ is basically from the Vasai-Virar region, near Mumbai. Mutton Poha or Poha Mutton is very similar to a mutton pulao where rice is substituted with Poha or pressed rice.
My mum used to make Mutton Poha very often, especially on Sundays, when we were growing up. This is a very quick, easy, and flavourful recipe where Pressed Rice is cooked with Mutton along with Bottle Masala, onion, tomatoes, and a few whole spices. A must-try recipe for all meat lovers.
Mutton Poha Recipe
With just a few steps and basic ingredients, you can make this most delicious Mutton Poha and impress your family.
You’ll need mutton, poha, onions, tomatoes, ginger-garlic, and East Indian Bottle Masala. You can use any meat or mutton masala instead of Bottle Masala. You will also need the juice of half a lemon for that slightly tangy flavour.
We begin by preparing a mutton curry with onion, tomatoes, and ginger garlic. We then add poha or pressed rice, just enough to soak the gravy.
Cook the Mutton.
Mutton takes approximately an hour to cook on low to medium heat. To speed up the process we cook mutton in a pressure cooker along with chopped onion, turmeric, and salt for 3 to 4 whistles or till done.
Preparation of Mutton Curry:
In a deep heavy bottom vessel add oil/ghee and the sliced onions and fry until light brown. Add a little extra oil as you would be adding the Poha to this gravy later on. Then add chopped ginger, garlic, and slit green chillies, and saute for a few minutes. Add chopped tomatoes and saute until tomatoes soften. Next. add the bottle masala and fry for a minute and also the peeled potatoes.
Now add the boiled mutton from the pressure cooker along with its stock. Add extra water, an inch above the mutton. Cover and cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until the potatoes are cooked.
Adding Poha to the Gravy.
Once the potatoes are soft add a tablespoon each of coriander and mint leaves, garam masala powder, and the juice of half a lemon. Now it’s time to add the Poha/pressed rice. Watch the water level in the mutton curry, just 1 inch above the mutton and potatoes. If everything is fine, go ahead and add the Poha. Do not stir at this stage. Top with coriander and mint leaves and then turn off the heat. Cover the vessel and let it stand for 5 minutes so that the Poha soaks up all the gravy. After 5 minutes fluff the Poha and the mutton with a fork and serve. Enjoy hot with lemon wedges and raita or salad.
