This Spicy Grilled Mackerel Recipe is very easy to follow and prepare. It has simple spices and a wonderful tangy flavor which you will certainly love.

Mackerel is an oily fish rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. Mackerels are available in plenty in the coastal areas of Mumbai and Goa. It is a favourite seafood fish and cooked in numerous ways like curries, fried mackerels, etc.

As Mackerels are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, seafood lovers must include mackerels in their diet. You all know Omega -3 reduces triglycerides and is good for cardiac health.

This Spicy Grilled Mackerel recipe uses very little oil for grilling and makes a wonderful appetizer or a side dish. Let’s learn how to cook this whole mackerel fish that gets ready in minutes and delicious too.

How To Cook Whole Mackerel Fish (Grilled Mackerel Recipe)

Prep Time : 10 minutes

Cook Time : 15 minutes

Serves : 02 Persons

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 – 3 Big Mackerel
  • 2 tbsp Red Chilly Powder
  • 1 tbsp Ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tbsp thick pulp of tamarind
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 1 tsp Gram flour
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for grilling/basting the fish

METHOD

  • MARINATE THE FISH.
    Clean and wash the mackerel fish. Make a few slits on both sides of the fish. Mix chilly powder, ginger-garlic paste, gram flour, tamarind pulp and salt in a bowl. Apply this paste on to the fish, inside the cavity and into the slits. Marinate for at least 15 – 20 minutes. Instead of tamarind pulp, you can add lime juice to the marinade. I like to use tamarind pulp for grilling fish like Mackerels or Bombay Ducks because it gives a lovely tangy flavour to the fish.
  • GRILL THE FISH IN A GRILL PAN.
    I prefer to grill the fish with little oil in a grill pan as this renders a crispy outer skin and juicy flesh. Heat a grill pan and add a tbsp oil. Place the fish on the pan and grill on a medium flame for 7 – 8, flip over and let it grill for another 6 – 7 minutes.
  • GRILL THE FISH IN AN OVEN.
    To grill the mackerels in an oven, preheat the oven to 200 deg C and grill the fish for 20 minutes. Flip the fish after 10 minutes and baste with oil. In 20 minutes your mackerels will be well done.

  • 2 tbsp Red chilly powder
  • ½ tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp Ginger-garlic paste

How to cook whole mackerel fish

  • Wash and clean the mackerels well. Remove the innards and discard. Make a few slits on the fish.
  • In a bowl add chilly powder, turmeric powder, ginger-garlic paste, tamarind pulp, gram flour and salt. Apply this paste to the fish, all over inside the cavities and slits. Let it marinate for 10 – 15 minutes.
  • Heat oil in a grill pan and add the fish. Grill for 7 – 8 minutes on one side on a medium flame. Flip over and grill for another 6- 7 minutes, till the fish is done.
