Prawn Lonvas – Recipe for Prawn Curry

Prawn Lonvas is an East Indian Recipe for Prawn Curry and is one of the delicious and popular East Indian Curry Recipes.

Lonvas is a prawn curry with coconut and is spiced curry with Bottle Masala. We also use vegetables in this prawn curry.

How to make Prawn Curry – Lonvas

INGREDIENTS FOR PRAWN CURRY

  • Prawns – You will need about 1 cup washed and deveined prawns. We also prefer to keep the head and tail of the prawns intact to make prawn Lonvas. But you could choose to discard the head and skin.
  • Vegetables Lonvas is a prawn curry with vegetables. Vegetables like pumpkin, drumsticks, cauliflower, turnips, radish go well with this prawn curry. In this recipe of prawn curry, I have used turnips.
  • Coconut – Lonvas is also a prawn curry with coconut. We always use fresh coconut for making this prawn Lonvas. You can also use coconut milk instead of fresh coconut. Coconut milk gives a nice creamy texture to the curry.
  • Ginger-Garlic – Generally, when I mum makes this prawn lonvas, she never uses ginger-garlic in the recipe. I also follow the same recipe because we like it that way. You could use ginger-garlic when you blend the fresh coconut. If using coconut milk, use the ginger-garlic paste instead.
  • Tamarind – We also add tamarind juice in almost all our seafood recipes to give a little tang to curry. If you don’t like tamarind add a little vinegar instead.
  • Onion – Add one sliced onion to make this prawn curry. Adding onions are optional though you could use chopped or mashed garlic instead.

How to cook Prawn Curry

  • In a vessel, heat oil and fry the sliced onion and fry till the onion is translucent.
  • Then add the bottle masala and the vegetables. Add any vegetable you choose to. Now, add water, cover, and cook until the vegetables are almost done.
  • Now add in the prawns and the salt and cook further for 2 to 3 minutes. Put in the coconut paste/coconut milk and also the tamarind juice.
  • Add water or else add coconut milk to adjust the consistency of the prawn curry.

Your delicious Prawn Lonvas is ready in less than 20 – 25 minutes. This is a very easy recipe for Prawn Curry and generally made for afternoon meals.

    • Hi Herina,

My mum never used to add ginger-garlic paste to prawn lonvas but I know it is used. I follow the same recipe because it turns out to be delicious. But considering the current situation and the medicinal value of ginger-garlic, I suggest you must use it. I have altered the recipe and also added a video of prawn lonvas with drumsticks. Plz go through it and let me have your feedback. As for tomatoes and curry leaves, generally, this is not added to lonvas and I suggest that you omit it.
      Thanks for stopping by….
