East Indian Mutton Curry Recipe | Easy Mutton Curry Recipe

This is an EAST INDIAN MUTTON CURRY RECIPE with Bottle Masala that is so quick and easy to make. We will make this 1 kg mutton curry recipe in a pressure cooker resulting in succulent mutton pieces.

The beauty of traditional recipes is that they are simple to cook with minimum ingredients. One such recipe is this delicious and easy to follow East Indian mutton curry recipe.

This recipe does not include any blending or grinding. You simply chop the ingredients in a food processor and with a little sauteeing you can make this simple and extraordinary traditional mutton curry.

To give this curry a more authentic feel you could add turnips and radish to the dish. But in this recipe, I have only added potatoes as I could not lay my hands on tender turnips or radish.

Also, in this recipe, we use the East Indian Bottle Masala as the only spice mix, apart from a dash of homemade garam masala powder. This mutton curry is so simple yet delicious that you will find yourself making it way too often.

Let’s go through the East Indian Mutton Curry Recipe Ingredients

MUTTON: We will use 1 kg mutton for this curry recipe. While selecting mutton for this recipe, ensure that the meat is firm and pinkish in colour. This type of meat cooks quickly, and the meat tends to be tender resulting in a tasty mutton curry. Mutton that is wrinkled and dark in colour, takes longer to cook, and is not appetizing.

ONIONS: For 1 kg mutton curry we will need at least 5 medium-sized finely chopped onions. Onions make the base of the gravy and hence you could use more if you need more gravy.

TOMATOES: Use at least 3 medium tomatoes to get a tangy and thicker gravy.

GINGER, GARLIC & GREEN CHILLIES: All these are finely chopped and added to the gravy. Garlic, ginger, and chillies contribute to the texture and spiciness of the mutton curry.

BOTTLE MASALA: Bottle Masala is the main spice ingredient for this mutton curry recipe. You will not need to add any other spices. You could also use any mutton masala powder for this easy mutton curry recipe and you will not lose out on the taste.

GARAM MASALA: Though optional, we like to add a dash of garam masala powder towards the end of the cooking time. This exquisite and aromatic garam masala powder renders a wonderful flavour to this simple mutton curry recipe.

You could use store-bought garam masala powder in case you do not have homemade garam masala with you. But I highly suggest that you make a small batch of this aromatic garam masala powder and use it for your regular cooking. It’s simple to make with just a few ingredients that you may already have in your kitchen pantry.

Apart from the garam masala powder, we also like to use some whole spices to flavour the mutton curry. Spices, such as cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, and pepper along with bay leaves can be added in small quantities.

LEMON JUICE OR VINEGAR: Finally, use a dash of lemon juice or vinegar for that tangy taste.

How to make Mutton Curry (East Indian Mutton Curry Recipe)

We make this 1 kg mutton curry recipe in a pressure cooker for faster cooking. You will need a pressure cooker of about 3 to 5 liter capacity for cooking the curry well.

But if you are not in a hurry and if your mutton is also tender, I suggest that you cook this curry in a vessel. Cooking for a longer time melts the onions and tomatoes giving the curry a smooth and thick texture.

This mutton curry recipe is so simple to make that even beginners can attempt it, and you cannot go wrong with this.

  • To make this mutton curry, just heat a pressure cooker and add in some oil. When the oil is hot enough, add a few whole spices and let them sizzle.
  • Once the spices begin to sizzle, add in the chopped onions along with the chopped ginger, garlic, and green chillies juliennes.
  • Let the onions turn translucent and then add the bottle masala powder and the mutton. Also, add in the chopped tomatoes and combine well.
  • Cover the vessel and let the mutton cook in its own juices. Also, add salt to taste, stirring the mutton once or twice. By the way, goat meat is called mutton here.
  • Now after 15 to 20 minutes of slow cooking, add potatoes cut into big pieces. Using potatoes is optional but potatoes taste good in this mutton curry recipe.
  • Add warm water, as required for the curry and cover the pressure cooker and cook until the mutton is tender. This can take you about 2 whistles or 10 to 15 minutes of cooking on medium heat.
  • When you know that the mutton is cooked, switch off the flame and let the pressure cooker release its steam.
  • After you unlock the pressure cooker, add in a dash of the garam masala powder and lemon juice or vinegar. Simmer the mutton curry once again for a couple of minutes and then garnish with coriander leaves.
