In this recipe, we dip each slice of bread in the milk and egg mixture twice before frying. This way you will get a thick coat of custard on the French Toast. Moreover, the toast gets a nice golden crunch when fried, and yet it’s soft and fluffy on the inside. Sprinkle it with some cinnamon and sugar and enjoy it with your cup of tea.
What is French Toast?
French toast is a bread slice dipped in a custard mixture of milk, eggs, sugar, vanilla, and shallow fried in a pan with butter or oil. French toast is flavoured with cinnamon and drizzled with maple syrup or caster sugar.
French Toast is a breakfast item but can be served any time of the day with tea or coffee.
What is French Toast made of?
- BREAD – Preferably use stale bread that is at least a day old. The slices of bread should be firm enough so that they do not get soggy when you dip them in milk.
- Dip each slice of bread one at a time and set aside. Meanwhile, heat a pan and add butter or ghee, and then once again dip the bread slice a second time and shallow fry. Fry on both sides till you get a lovely golden crust on the toast.
- MILK – Preferably, use full cream milk or even the regular milk will be fine. If you want to go dairy-free, use almond or soy milk instead.
- EGGS – The ratio of milk and eggs for a perfect French Toast is 1:2. For every cup of milk I like to use two whole eggs. The French Toast turns out fluffy and has a crisp outer crust that is golden. The eggs, milk, and sugar are responsible for this golden glow on the French Toast.
- SWEETENER – I like to use caster sugar for our Cinnamon French Toast as it dissolves easily. Even granulated sugar works just as fine. You could use maple syrup or honey to sweeten your french toast. But if using honey or maple syrup I suggest that you drizzle it on the toast once they are fried.
- CINNAMON & VANILLA – A warming spice cinnamon gives a distinct taste and flavour to French Toast. Vanilla extract or essence complements the spice cinnamon and I recommend that you use both.
- BUTTER, OIL, OR GHEE – Butter tends to burn quickly so I prefer to use ghee for frying the French Toast. You could use vegetable oil and butter. We prefer ghee because it gives the french toast an amazing flavour and taste and it’s nutritious too.
How to make French Toast ?
- Combine eggs, milk, and sugar and add cinnamon powder in a deep wide bowl. Add a dash of vanilla extract or essence, and beat well with a whisk. Dip each slice of bread in this custard mixture. Don’t leave the slice too long in the egg mixture for it can turn soggy.
- Now heat a pan and add oil, butter, or ghee. When the oil is hot enough add the bread slices one at a time, depending on the size of your pan. Allow it to fry for 2 to 3 minutes on one side till you get a nice golden crust. Flip over and fry on the next side too.
- If you want a thick coat of milk and eggs, then dip the bread slice once again into the egg mixture before frying.
What to put on French Toast?
Once the french toast is fried well on both sides, you will get a wonderful golden crust. The French Toast will be soft and fluffy inside if done well.
Add a dash of cinnamon over the fried french toast. Also, drizzle some maple syrup or honey and serve.
Alternately, sprinkle a little granulated sugar or caster sugar on the hot french toast. The heat of the just fried toast will melt the sugar and give a sweet coat to the toast. Your kids will love it this way.
