This is a Simple East Indian Recipe for Beef Steak that you can cook at home in a pressure cooker. This is also a easy recipe and has very few ingredients that are readily available in every kitchen.
We would get very good quality beef in Mumbai when we were growing up and Mum would make this recipe quite too often. This was our family favourite and we would enjoy this beef steak with some local pav or bread.
Since we cook this recipe in a pressure cooker, the beef is very soft and juicy. The succulent pieces of beef are coated in a slight sweetish gravy of onions. It also has a lot of black pepper powder and vinegar that gives the dish a spicy sweet and sour taste.
This Beef Steak Recipe tastes better the next day just like any other dish that has vinegar. You can make this in advance and refrigerate and just heat it up in a microwave or a pan before serving. Add some fried potatoes as an accompaniment and enjoy this beef steak with bread or chapatis.
Getting good quality beef in India, especially in Mumbai has become rare these days. Yet with whatever quality of beef you get, you can still make the most delicious Beef Steak.
Marinade for Beef Steak
The marinade for this beefsteak is very basic and has few ingredients.
Besides, this simple marinade does not overpower the natural flavours of beef. Thus the end result is a piece of juicy and tender beef steak in every morsel.
The ingredients that we use for this Recipe for Beef Steak marinade are –
- Black pepper powder that is freshly ground
- Juice of a lemon
- A big piece of ginger roughly mashed
- Salt to taste
Cut the beef into thin slices, and flatten the slices with a meat mallet. This also helps in tenderizing the meat. Then apply the ingredients for the marinade and allow it to marinate overnight. This gives the beef enough time to absorb the simple flavours and tenderise thus reducing the cooking time. If you are hard on time then at least 3 to 4 hours of marination is a must.
Cover the marinated meat with a cling film or transfer it into a zip lock bag. Allow the beef to rest in the refrigerator till you are ready to cook it the next day or after a few hours.
How to cook Beef Steak in a Pressure Cooker
- We like to cook our beef steak in a pressure cooker or a pot but I prefer the pressure cooker method for faster cooking.
- Nonetheless, you must sear the marinated beef before cooking. This retains the juices in the meat and results in succulent meat pieces. For this take a Kadai and add 2 tbsp oil and brown the meat on a medium to high flame.
- Next, in a pressure cooker add 3 medium sliced onions, ginger, garlic, and fry until the onions are translucent. These onions will yield a smooth sweetish gravy for the beefsteak.
- Then add the beef that you had set aside in the refrigerator for marination. Also, add in the meat juices that may have been released during the marination. Do not add any extra water at this stage because the beef releases a lot of moisture during cooking which is just prefect.
- Add a tsp of freshly ground pepper powder, a 1/4 cup of vinegar, and only half a cup of water if you desire. Mix well and cover the pressure cooker. After the first whistle, reduce the flame and let the meat cook for approximately 20 to 30 minutes on a low flame. The cooking time depends on the quality of meat and also the type of pressure cooker you are using.
- After you are sure that the meat is cooked, switch off the flame and let the pressure release on its own. Now open the pressure cooker and dry up all the liquids till you get a thick sauce. Your tender and juicy recipe for beef steak are completed.
- Serve it with some sides like fried potatoes or steamed veggies. To fry the potatoes, simply cut them into round slices and add some salt. Heat some oil in a pan and shallow fry the potatoes till done. Else, apply some salt and oil and air fry them for 8 to 10 minutes.
