Beef Roast in Pressure Cooker is one of our favourite family recipes that mum made during our growing up days. The beef was freely available in Mumbai back then and Dad just loved it.
Beef Roast and Potatoes. This succulent Beef Roast recipe is cooked in a pressure cooker and then served with potatoes.
Potatoes served as an accompaniment to any meal make any meal more delicious. This Beef Roast recipe can also serve as a filling to make wholesome sandwiches.
The Beef that we get in Mumbai is sometimes tough to cook and hence we prefer making the roast in a pressure cooker. You could also use an instant pot or crockpot for this. Cooking the beef in a pressure cooker yields tender and juicy roast.
Recipe for Beef Roast and Potatoes (in Pressure Cooker)
The recipe is devoid of any strong spices and brings out the authentic flavour of the meat. The roast is very tender and juicy and every slice is just melt-in your mouth. The fried potatoes are a perfect accompaniment to this recipe of Beef Roast.
For a perfect Beef Roast in a Pressure Cooker, use a good cut of meat, for instance, tenderloin (undercut) meat. Marination is the key to a succulent beef roast. At the same time, don’t forget to fork the meat well so as to let the marinade seep into it.
After the meat is well marinated then transfer it into a pressure cooker along with the liquids in the pot. Add about half a cup of water and pressure cook the beef till you get a succulent beef roast.
This will take you almost half an hour of pressure cooking on a low to medium flame. Also, fry some potatoes to serve as an accompaniment to the Beef Roast.
Beef Roast Ingredients
MEAT – Use a good cut of meat like tenderloin for this beef roast recipe. Cut the meat into big chunks if you want to cook the beef roast in a pressure cooker.
SOUR LIMES – Extract the juice of one large or two sour limes and set it aside for use in the marination.
GINGER – We do not use any ginger paste for this recipe but all you need is a big piece of mashed ginger.
RED CHILLIES – 3 to 4 whole red chilies broken and then added to the marination give a light pink colour to the beef. They also give a slightly spicy hint to the beef roast.
WHOLE SPICES – Using whole spices in the marination is optional though. Whole spices do not contribute much to the flavour of the beef roast and thus can be skipped. If you like you could add a few cloves, cinnamon, and peppercorns.
SALTPETER – Saltpeter, as you know is a curing salt for meat preservation. Besides preservation, it also gives a lovely pink hue to the cooked meat. Saltpeter was always added to the beef roast cooked by my mum. Just a small quantity would suffice. I skipped the saltpeter in this recipe as I did not have it with me. Nonetheless, this did not alter the taste and texture of this beef roast recipe.

Beef Roast – How to cook?
- You could cook Beef Roast in a Pressure Cooker, an instant pot, a crockpot, or in an oven. I prefer to use the pressure cooker like my mum.
- To cook the Beef Roast in a Pressure cooker – Wash the meat a couple of times. Then marinate it with simple ingredients such a sour lime juice, salt, red chillies, crushed ginger, and few whole spices.
- Rub the marinade all over the meat and then pierce the meat with a fork let the marinade seep into it.
- It is suggested that you keep the meat in the refrigerator for marinating for at least 4 to 5 hours or best overnight. Marination will not only tenderize the meat but will allow the flavours to seep into it.
- After the marination period is over, transfer the beef along with the juices into a pressure cooker. Also, add half a cup of water and then pressure cook until the meat is completely cooked approximately half an hour. Cook on a low to medium flame for the best results.
- Switch off the flame after you are sure that the meat is completely cooked. The cooking time entirely depends on the pressure cooker that you are using. If the meat is undercooked, don’t worry you can close the cooker lid once again and place it on a medium flame. Cook the beef roast for another 10 to 15 minutes or till done.
Serving Suggestions
To serve the beef roast, first, open the pressure cooker after the pressure has been completely released. Now, thicken the remaining liquid in the pressure cooker and then mix it with the beef roast.
Sear the meat and some boiled potatoes on a griddle and then smear it with the thickened liquid from the pressure cooker. You will thus get a moist and juicy beef roast.
Serve as an appetizer or as a side dish or simply make delicious sandwiches with the Beef Roast.
