This is a simple recipe in which we first marinate the chicken with yogurt along with a few aromatic spices. Then we let the marination stay in the refrigerator for a couple of minutes. Yogurt tenderizes the meat and also penetrates into the meat making it absolutely flavourful.
The spices that we use for our this recipe are very simple aromatic spices. These are spices like pepper, cumin, cardamom, nutmeg that are easily available in every kitchen. You just have to use a little of it to bring out its absolute flavour.
Later, we cook the chicken in oil or butter. Also, add more yogurt to suit your taste and also increase the volume of the gravy. But here it is important to use fresh yogurt or else you will end up with a sour yogurt sauce. Finally, add fresh cream to give the gravy a smooth and creamy texture.
Your delicious recipe is finally ready. You can enjoy it with butter naan or Rotis. Finally, add fresh mint leaves to garnish. Mint leaves compliment the yogurt gravy. Thus you will end up with an awesome tasting gravy with a burst of subtle flavours.
How to make Chicken with Yogurt or Dahi wala Chicken recipe step by step
First of all marinate the chicken with fresh yogurt or dahi, ginger-garlic paste, salt, and cumin powder. Let it stand for at least 20 to 30 minutes. This step will ensure that the chicken tenderizes thus making it cook faster.
In a pan heat some oil and butter. Later add some whole spices like bay leaf cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, and a few green chillies slit. Fry for a few minutes to ensure that the spices release its flavours.
After a minute or two add in the marinated chicken. Mix well and cover the pan and let the chicken cook till done. Since we have marinated the chicken the cooking time would be just 15 to 20 minutes.
Now add in a little more yogurt, garam masala and nutmeg powder and fresh cream. Mix well and then simmer for 2 minutes. Isn’t this so quick and easy?

Recipe of Chicken with Yogurt
Ingredients
- 500 grams Chicken on the bone
- 1 tbsp Butter
- 1 tbsp Oil for cooking
- Whole spices (bay leaf-1, cinnamon 1-inch, cardamom -3, cloves 3 – 4)
- 4 – 5 Green chillies, slit
- ½ cup Fresh yogurt
- 1 cup Fresh cream
- ½ cup Mint leaves
For the Marination
- 1 cup Fresh yogurt
- 1 tsp Ginger/garlic paste
- 1 tsp Cumin powder
- Salt to taste
Spice powders
- 1 tsp Garam masala and nutmeg powder
- 1 tsp Cardamom powder
- 1 tsp Pepper powder
- 1 tsp Cumin powder
Instructions
- Marinate chicken with salt, yogurt and cumin powder for atleast 30 minutes.
- Heat a pan or a kadai and add the oil and butter. Also add the whole spices .
- When the spices begin to splutter add the marinated chicken. Cover and cook till the chicken is tender.
- After 15 to 20 minutes the chicken should be cooked. Now add in 1/2 cup yogurt, garam masala & nutmeg powder, cardamom powder, pepper powder and 1 cup fresh cream.
- Finally, add the mint leaves.
Notes
- Adjust the quantity of yogurt and cream to suit your taste.
- If you need to make gravy for this recipe, add boiled onion paste after you add the whole spices
