Heat a pressure cooker or a kadai and then add 2 tbsp oil. Then add the chopped onion, ginger, and slit green chillies and stir.
Saute for a few minutes until the onions turn light golden brown or translucent.
Now add the spices- chilli powder, coriander powder, and turmeric. Also, add in the salt and mix well. Saute for 2 minutes over medium heat until the raw smell of the spices disappears.
If you like to add the East Indian Bottle Masala you can do it now and skip the other spices.
Add the washed and drained sabut masoor dal to the pressure cooker and combine it well with the spices.
Then add in the water, just enough to cook the whole masoor dal. Stir well, cover the lid and pressure cook for 3 to 4 whistles. Let the pressure release by itself and then open the lid.
If using a Kadai, cover the Kadai with a lid and cook until the masoor dal is soft.
Now add in half a teaspoon of garam masala powder and the chopped tomato. Mix well and cook for 2 more minutes over medium heat.
