Sabut Masoor Dal Recipe In A Pressure Cooker

Whole Masoor Dal Recipe cooked in a Pressure Cooker. This highly nutritious recipecooked in a few spices can be served with chapatis, rice or Rotis.

Equipment

  • Pressure Cooker or Kadai

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup Masoor Dal wash this well a few times and then soak it in clean water for a couple of hours.
  • 1 medium Onion
  • 1 medium Tomato
  • 2 Green chillies slit
  • 1 inch Ginger finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp Chilli powder
  • 1 tbsp Coriander powder
  • ½ tsp Turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp Garam Masala powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp Oil

Instructions
 

  • Heat a pressure cooker or a kadai and then add 2 tbsp oil. Then add the chopped onion, ginger, and slit green chillies and stir.
  • Saute for a few minutes until the onions turn light golden brown or translucent.
  • Now add the spices- chilli powder, coriander powder, and turmeric. Also, add in the salt and mix well. Saute for 2 minutes over medium heat until the raw smell of the spices disappears.
  • If you like to add the East Indian Bottle Masala you can do it now and skip the other spices.
  • Add the washed and drained sabut masoor dal to the pressure cooker and combine it well with the spices.
  • Then add in the water, just enough to cook the whole masoor dal. Stir well, cover the lid and pressure cook for 3 to 4 whistles. Let the pressure release by itself and then open the lid.
  • If using a Kadai, cover the Kadai with a lid and cook until the masoor dal is soft.
  • Now add in half a teaspoon of garam masala powder and the chopped tomato. Mix well and cook for 2 more minutes over medium heat.
  • Finally, Sabut Masoor Dal Recipe in a pressure cooker is ready for serving. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.

Notes

  1. You can make this Sabut Masoor Dal Recipe using Bottle Masala.  Just skip the chilli powder, coriander, and turmeric and simply add 1 tbsp of bottle masala.
  2. While making this recipe in a pressure cooker, please check the cooking time.  Do not overcook the Sabut Masoor Dal.
  3. Adjust spices to suit your taste.
