Tiny Shrimps Recipe or Fresh Jawla Recipe. Tiny shrimps or jawla are small shrimp that are usually found in the Indian Ocean. We call these tiny shrimps jawla in the local dialect.
Tiny Shrimps are delicious when cooked quickly over high heat to make a dry Chilli Fry. You can also prepare a variety of recipes with shrimps like jawla cutlets, jawla with brinjal, etc. This seafood delicacy is enjoyed by a large group of seafood lovers and is available throughout the year.
These tiny shrimps or jawla are available fresh and dried too. They are got in large quantities from the sea and fishermen dry the extra tiny shrimps under the hot sun. Dried jawla or tiny shrimps can then be stored for over a year and they come in handy, especially during the monsoons when fresh fish is scarce.
In this article, I am sharing a recipe for tiny shrimp or fresh/ola jawla. This recipe uses a combination of spices and herbs to give the shrimp/jawla a delicious flavor.

Recipe For Tiny Shrimps (Fresh Jawla Recipe)
Jawla or tiny shrimps are very delicious when cooked with spices like ginger, garlic, coriander leaves, spring onions, green chillies, turmeric powder, bottle masala, etc.
For the recipe for tiny shrimps, you will need:
- 1 & 1/2 cups fresh jawla (shrimps)
- Spring onions – 4 sprigs
- 1 medium red onion
- 2 -3 green chillies, slit
- 4 cloves of garlic
- 2 tbsp East Indian Bottle Masala or any red masala powder or chilli powder
- 1/2 cup of tamarind extract (a small ball of tamarind soaked in warm water)
- 3 tbsp oil
- Coriander leaves for garnish
- Salt to taste

How To Cook Tiny Shrimps (Fresh Jawla Recipe)
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Serves: 4 to 5 persons
Method:
- Wash the shrimps thoroughly under running water and drain them in a colander to get rid of the excess water.
- Heat oil in a pan, add 4 crushed garlic cloves and fry for a minute. Then add the sliced onion and slit green chillies. Fry on medium heat until the onions turn translucent. Next add in the spring onions and reserve the leeks for garnish.
- Fry for a minute and then add the bottle masala or red chilli powder. Add the tiny shrimps and salt and stir well. Saute’ for 2 minutes and then add the tamarind extract and a tablespoon of chopped coriander leaves. Now cover the vessel and cook the tiny shrimps/jawla for 10 minutes on medium heat.
- After 10 minutes, open the lid and add the remaining coriander leaves and all the onion leeks. Mix well and allow to simmer for 2 minutes and then turn off the heat.
Serving Suggestions
This shrimps recipe will make 4 to 5 servings. You can serve tiny shrimp or jawla as a side dish or as a main course with rice rotis, chapatis or bread.

Ingredients

Notes
- Cooking time may differ. Cook the shrimps for minimum 10 to 15 minutes.
- Wash shrimps thoroughly before cooking.
- Adjust masala powder to suit your taste.
- Use any red curry masala or chilli powder if you don’t have bottle masala.
- You can substitute tamarind with kokum.
