The recipe that I am sharing in this post today is authentic Chicken Curry from Southern India. In fact, this recipe was given to my mum by our dear neighbour and I am so happy to share this recipe with you.
Earlier, I had posted a recipe for Moong Dal Payasam Recipe. That recipe was too given to my Mum by our same neighbour dear Aunty Shetty. Aunty Sundari Shetty is no more but she remains in our hearts through her love and of course her recipes too.
These are a gem of traditional recipes that you cannot miss. I have therefore preserved these in our family recipe diary and make them as often as I can.
However, coming back to the Chicken recipe, my mum used to make this recipe quite often since my family loved it a lot. I am not sure if Mum tweaked the recipe to suit our family’s taste but nonetheless, it’s delicious.
I happen to make this recipe last week and I thought of sharing it with you all. I am sure that you too will also enjoy this delicious South Indian Chicken Curry Recipe from my dear Aunty Shetty.
South Indian Chicken Curry Recipe Step by Step
STEP – I
MARINADE FOR CHICKEN CURRY – The key to succulent chicken nonetheless lies in its marination. We marinate the chicken with turmeric and salt for this recipe and set it aside for a few minutes. Chicken on the bone is best for this chicken curry and I have used 500 grams of chicken.
STEP – II
- MASALA BLEND – Now as the chicken is marinating let us in the meanwhile roast the spices for the masala. The ingredients for the masala paste are –
- Dried Red chillies – 10 to 12 Nos.
- Coriander seeds – 1 tbsp
- Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
- Poppy seeds – 1 tsp
- Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
- Fenugreek seeds – 1/4 tsp
- Whole spices like Cinnamon 1-inch, cloves 4 to 5, peppercorns 1/2 tsp
- Ginger 1 – inch
- Garlic 7 to 8 flakes
- Freshly grated coconut – 1/2 cup ( Roast light in a pan with 1 tsp oil)
- You will need to blend these spices into a smooth paste first with water. Then roast the freshly grated coconut in a teaspoon of oil and add to the masala paste and coarsely blend. The coconut in the paste should be coarse and not fine, so I suggest you run the mixer only once or twice.
STEP – III
How to make South Indian Chicken Curry
- After we have blended the masala, now it’s time to make the gravy. Subsequently, heat a vessel or a Kadai and add 2 to 3 tbsp of oil. When the oil is just hot, add in 2 medium sliced onions and saute until translucent.
- Next, add in the marinated chicken, 1 medium tomato chopped, and fry for 2 minutes. Now cover the vessel and let the chicken cook for at least 10 to 12 minutes or till done.
- After this, add in the ground masala paste along with the coconut and then mix well. Also, add a few curry leaves at this stage. Add chicken stock or water if you need a thin gravy. However, I have not added any water to this gravy but I let the chicken cook in its own juices.
- Cover and cook further till the chicken is soft and tender. Open the lid and then add the juice of half a lemon and finally garnish with coriander leaves.
- Traditionally, after the chicken is cooked it is tempered with oil. For tempering, heat some oil in a small pan, and add a few curry leaves and mashed garlic flakes. Pour this over the cooked chicken and cover the vessel for an authentic aroma.
Delicious South Indian Chicken Curry Recipe is finally ready in just under 30 minutes. Make this chicken recipe for your dinner or lunch and let me have your valuable feedback.
