Fish Kujit | Fish Curry Recipe

Fish Kujit is a traditional fish curry recipe with the freshness of green masala and the goodness of fresh coconut and spices.

This East Indian Fish Curry has a slight tangy taste from the use of tamarind and a dash of vinegar. We use palm vinegar for most of our curries but any vinegar will be fine.

Traditionally, coconut milk is used to make this fish curry, but today I used fresh coconut for this fish curry recipe. Use green chillies to spice up the gravy because we are using very few red chillies but use it according to your spice level.

Fish Kujit-Fish Curry Recipe

In this recipe, I have used fresh Rawas fish also known as Indian Salmon. You could also use Surmai (Seer Fish), Pomfret or any other fish for making Fish Kujit.

I remember as kids, we would swop up this curry with crusty bread. Curries have always been our comfort food and we love to have it with rice or rice rotis or even bread.

RECIPE FOR FISH CURRY

  • Apply salt and turmeric to the fish and grind the masala, to a fine paste and set aside. Skip the coconut if you are using coconut milk.

  • Chop one small onion. Heat 2 -3 tbsp oil in a broad vessel and fry the chopped onion, till translucent. We also make fish curry without oil. I will share this recipe later.
  • When the onions are translucent add in the masala paste and fry for a few minutes. Sprinkle a little water if your masala is too dry but take care and do not burn the masala. Add 2 or 3 cups of water and let the curry come to a boil. If you are using coconut milk, add the thin coconut milk instead of water.
  • When the curry comes to a boil, add in the fish slices, one chopped tomato, 1-inch ginger juliennes and few slit green chillies. Let the curry simmer for 2 – 3 minutes. When the fish curry is simmering check for seasonings and add 1 – 2 tsp vinegar.
  • Serve Fish Kujit fish curry with accompaniments like steamed rice, rotis or bread.

I have a video on how to cook fish curry, which you may like to see.
